Limited water supply in South Africa due to electricity shortages, residents ask for patience

SANTO ANTÓNIO – Although snow has come and gone, winter conditions in the San Antonio region continue to pose unforeseen dangers as temperatures remain below freezing.

Homes, businesses and at least one local hospital are battling rotating power outages and limited water supplies.

The San Antonio Water System is already responding to several calls and some are being dropped from the queue due to the volume of calls, SAWS officials said.

Anne Hayden of SAWS said that Texas infrastructure is currently stressed and customers must remain patient as there is not only one solution to the problem. The water problems are likely due to electricity affecting water pumps or frozen pipes, according to Hayden.

“What we are seeing in San Antonio is the intermittent electrical supply, in which our pumps cannot operate without power. The water is coming out and we don’t have any water in the tanks to replenish the pressure, ”said Hayden.

If your pipes are frozen, be sure to go to the meter and turn off the water. Hayden said that once temperatures get hot again, be aware that frozen pipes can break or crack, causing major damage to your home.

If the pipes have not frozen, there are a few things you can do to help prevent this. Read more about it here.
