Warning: spoilers ahead for Netfix Bling Empire. Kim Lee’s father in Bling Empire on Netflix was a mystery to her for most of her life. Kim is one of eight members of the main cast in Bling Empire, Netflix’s new reality show about a circle of really crazy and wealthy Asians in Los Angeles.
The show follows the cast – which also includes Kevin Kreider, Christine Chiu, Anna Shay, Kane Lim, Cherie Chan, Kim Mi Li and Jamie Xie – as they party, shop, fight and settle their personal relationships. Most of Kim’s story in Season 1 revolves around the search for her father, who left her after her mother’s divorce, Kimmy, when she was 8 years old. As Kim explains in Bling Empire, his father, Tony, asked Kim if she wanted to live with him or his mother after the divorce. Without knowing that she would not see her father again, Kim chose her mother and her father left forever. Kim lived the next few decades of his life, his mother and stepfather, screenwriter Daniel Segal.
With the help of his friend Kevin, who is also looking for his birth parents, Kim hires a private investigator to look for his father. The investigator finds out that Kim’s father moved to South Carolina and remarried another woman. The investigator also gives Kim his father’s last known address and phone number. When Kim and Kevin call the number, they stay in the mailbox. Kim then hesitates whether she should look for her father, which leads Kevin and his other friend, Kane, to travel to South Carolina in secret to see if they can find out more about his father.
When they arrive in South Carolina, Kevin and Kane go to the address the investigator gave them. When no one is home, the two hit the neighbor’s house, who tells them that a Vietnamese named Michael lives next door. The neighbor also says that Michael works in a beauty salon. Suspecting that Michael is Kim’s father, Tony, Kevin and Kane go to the beauty salon to talk to Michael. The man at the beauty salon tells them that he is not Tony and does not know Kim after Kevin and Kane show her picture. Defeated, Kevin and Kane return to their hotel room, where they receive a call from Tony’s phone number that the private investigator gave them. The person on the other end of the line is Tony’s new wife, who tells Kevin and Kane that Kim’s father died two years ago from kidney problems and a heart attack. The wife also says that Tony loved Kim and never stopped thinking about her.
When Kevin and Kane told Kim this when they returned to Los Angeles, Kim cried and mourned the loss of his father. “I feel like a small part of me is missing right now,” she said. “When you lose a parent, you will never be the same. It is a different kind of pain. “Kim’s mother said,” There have been so many times, I think about him. I just wish him well. But I had a feeling that he was no longer here in this world. ” At the end of Bling EmpireKim talks to her friend Christine and gives her advice to fix her relationship with her parents before it’s too late.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin explained why he and Kane went to Kim’s father without telling her. “I also wanted to go to South Carolina to meet Kim’s father with or without his permission and Kane was very hesitant and said, ‘No, we don’t want to step on her feet’, and I said, ‘Fuck this. Let’s just do it, ‘”he said. “Everything in my body and my soul told me to do this, and to trust that everything would work out. We went there without knowing anything. It was literally taking a flight, taking an Airbnb and that’s it, and we’ll find out from there. And everything worked out the way it should. “
