Kansas City Chiefs place Britt Reid on leave after accident with a seriously injured child

Kansas City linebacker coach Britt Reid is on administrative leave after a multiple vehicle accident last week that seriously injured a 5-year-old boy, the team said on Tuesday.

He is the son of Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid.

A pickup hit two vehicles – one that ran out of gas and the other that stopped to help – on a highway ramp shortly after 9 pm on Thursday near Interstate 435 and Stadium Drive, police said.

A 5-year-old girl remains in critical condition, Captain David Jackson said on Tuesday.

The police did not publicly name Reid, but search warrant documents filed in court and obtained by NBC affiliate KSHB claim that Britt was driving the Dodge Ram truck in the accident that happened days before the team traveled to the Super Bowl in Florida. Britt Reid was not expected to make the trip to the game.

In one of these court documents, a police officer wrote that Reid admitted to being the driver and the policeman reported smelling “a moderate odor of alcohol” and that Britt Reid’s eyes were red and bloodshot. Asked if he was taking prescription drugs, Britt Reid replied that he was taking Aderrall, the officer wrote the document.

Britt Reid reportedly said he drank two to three drinks, according to the search warrant request, which sought blood collection.

“We are continuing the process of gathering information about the incident and will continue to assist local authorities as requested,” the chiefs said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Our focus remains on Ariel Young and his family,” said the team. “We reached out to the family to offer our support and resources to them during this difficult period and we will continue to pray for their recovery.”

The 5-year-old was one of two children in the back seat of a stationary vehicle. The other child, aged 4, suffered injuries that were not fatal.

Police on Tuesday refused to discuss details, citing an ongoing investigation. Investigations could take weeks, Jackson said.

Andy Reid at a news conference on Sunday after the Chiefs’ defeat in the Super Bowl addressed the accident.

“My heart is with all those who were involved in the accident, in particular the family with the girl who is fighting for her life,” said Andy Reid.

He then said that he couldn’t comment much more, but said: “Only from a human point of view, man, my heart bleeds, for everyone involved in this.”
