With Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes not playing in Week 17, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers presumably won the 2020 NFL MVP award. During Wednesdays PFT PM, Charean Williams suggested another candidate for the award.

Josh Allen.

Why not Josh Allen? The Bills quarterback had a phenomenal year, with 4,320 passing yards and 43 touchdowns in total (34 passes, eight runs and one receiving). The team defeated the division previously owed by the Patriots with a record 12-3, an unexpected improvement over last year’s wild card e-feat routine.

Rodgers was also phenomenal. He has 44 touchdown passes and three quick touchdowns, with 4,059 passing yards and a ridiculous passer rating of 119.4.

Rodgers became a big favorite for the award; PointsBet currently has a chance of -500. Allen is a +1200 proposition.

But here’s the key: human beings vote for this one, and the vote comes after Sunday’s games. What if the Packers lose to the Bears? What if Allen starts at Buffalo and continues with his recent tear?

Rodgers remains the smart choice and it will be a pain if he doesn’t win. But Allen deserves some consideration for the prize, before the ballots are made.

At the very least, he is worthy of being named the best player in the NFL. This is a category that is not among the postseason awards. Maybe it should be.

For now, it’s MVP or nothing for Allen. Although Rodgers is likely to win, it is difficult to argue against Allen’s defense for the prize.
