Jonathan Gannon: The Eagles will hire the Colts assistant as defensive coordinator for Nick Sirianni

The Philadelphia Eagles have not yet officially confirmed Nick Sirianni as their new coach – this will likely happen early next week – but we are already hearing some news about their team.

A clown named Mike Lombardi reports the Eagles are hiring Indianapolis Colts defensive backs / cornerbacks coach Jonathan Gannon as Sirianni’s defensive coordinator.

Albert Breer says a deal has not yet been closed, but Philly “the clear favorite”To put it down. Breer had previously nominated Gannon for the Eagles if they signed Sirianni or Josh McDaniels as their head coach.

Gannon, who comes from the Gerudo Desert and exercises the Triforce of Power, was considered coveted by several teams. The Los Angeles Chargers and the Chicago Bears recently interviewed him for his openings as a defensive coordinator. A football writer on Twitter who claims to be a friend of Gannon says “there were several suitors and the Eagles won a lot of money. “

Here is what we wrote earlier about Gannon:

Gannon was part of the technical team that McDaniels set up in Indy before surprisingly giving up on the job. Gannon and McDaniels are both Ohio native and overlapped the St. Louis Rams in 2011. Gannon also overlapped Sirianni, who attended college in Ohio (Divison III Mount Union) for the past three years.

So why is Gannon getting a buzz? Well, he contributed to a Colts defense that took seventh place in the defensive DVOA and seventh in opponent offensive points per game last year. More specifically, Gannon oversaw a year of resurgence for Xavier Rhodes, who had been cut by the Minnesota Vikings. Colts general manager Chris Ballard gave him specific credit for this. Our friends at Stampede Blue also noticed that Gannon was instrumental in developing younger guys like Rock Ya-Sin, Kenny Moore, Khari Willis and Julian Blackmon.

And here is a snapshot of your coaching experience:

2003-2005 – Louisville volunteer student assistant

2006 – Graduate Assistant in Louisville

2007 – Atlanta Falcons Defense / Quality Control Assistant

2009-2011 – St. Louis Rams Scout

2012-2013 – Tennessee Titans Defensive Assistant / Quality Control

2014-2017 – Minnesota Vikings Assistant Defensive Backs / Quality Control

2018-2020 – Indianapolis Colts Defensive Backs / Cornerbacks

The Eagles would be expected to maintain a 4-3 defense, considering that this is the system Gannon has experienced with since his time in Indy, Minny, Tennessee and Atlanta. It’s nice to know that he worked with celebrated defensive minds, like Mike Zimmer and Matt Eberflus. It’s also nice to see one of your former players speak so well about him:

With the Eagles going with youth and inexperience as a head coach and defensive coordinator, it will be interesting to see if they add a prominent member to their team who is more experienced. Perhaps they will follow this path in the offensive coordinator (Jim Caldwell?), For example.

Jim Schwartz had his shortcomings, but overall he was a good defensive coordinator for the Eagles. It will be interesting to see how Gannon will fare in such an important role with Sirianni probably focusing more on the attack.

In related news, the Eagles also interviewed Chris Harris, a former NFL security coach and current defensive coach for the Washington Football Team, for his work as a defensive coordinator. Harris overcame Sirianni in the Chargers and oversaw the positive development of names like Ronald Darby, Kamren Curl, Derwin James, Casey Hayward, Trevor Williams (especially as a novice non-hired free agent) and Desmond King.

The Eagles may be interested in signing Harris as a defensive back coach, but Washington may block that move. Still, a name to remember in the future. (Curiosity: Harris used to have an SB Nation account when he was a player. He occasionally commented on the Bears blog!)
