John Oliver makes his triumphant return to Last week tonight next Sunday on HBO. But first, he joined Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night Late Show to assess everything he missed since the end of the post-election season last fall.
“There we go again, again,” said Colbert at the beginning of the show, explaining that the first day of Trump’s second impeachment hearing – or, as he called it, “déjà coup”–it ended up being “a lot less boring” than he thought it would be. The host was especially moved by the “devastating” video of the Casa’s impeachment managers presented at the beginning of their opening arguments.
After joking about the reality that he is, at 43, the same age as seven-times Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, Oliver assessed the day’s proceedings, calling them “the perfect echo of the Trump presidency – something that should be nothing is made of much. “
“I realized that the first lawyer was involved in a kind of beat freestyle poetry for a while and then the second threatened a civil war, right? Oliver added.
“I thought he was just trying to run out of time,” said Colbert, comparing Trump’s lawyer, Bruce Castor, to a comedian who has to act for an entire hour.
Colbert also spent several minutes of his monologue attacking Trump, Castor’s “completely unprepared” defense team, who started by accidentally referring to himself as the “chief prosecutor”, to David Schoen, who “played the ‘bad cop’ ‘for the’ bad Castor lawyer ‘”And he presented a montage of Democrats arguing that Trump should have been impeached from his first year in office.
“Uh, Dave? This is not the knockout punch you think it is, ”replied the host. “’Your Honor, my client did not burn that school. I present the court with three years of 911 calls saying he is an arsonist. ‘”
