John Elway relinquishes control of the Broncos squad and plans to hire general manager

Denver Broncos executive John Elway announced on Monday that he will step down as general manager of the organization, but will remain president of football operations.

The new general manager and current head coach, Vic Fangio, will report to Elway as part of the new organizational structure for the franchise, the team said.

“Working in this role for the past 10 years and going back to my days as a player, I have always tried to do everything I can to help the Broncos win and improve,” said Elway in a press release. “As part of a transition that I thought about for a long time, I made the decision to take on a high role and hire a general manager to lead our football team and staff.

“Although I will continue to be president of Football Operations in 2021, GM will have the final say on the draft, free agency and our squad. That person will be empowered to make all football decisions, working in partnership with Vic.

“I will be there to support our GM and Vic, providing my perspective, helping with big decisions and being a sounding board whenever necessary. With everything that goes on in a GM’s day-to-day responsibilities and how the job has grown, this structure will prepare us for success and allow me to focus on the big picture. “

Elway said Fangio will have a say in the hiring process for the general manager.

The two-time Super Bowl champion took on the role of general manager and executive vice president of football operations in January 2011 and ultimately took full control of the squad after the 2011 season. He was in charge during the two appearances by the Broncos in the Super Bowl, one of which they won.

However, since the 2015 season, the team has not reached the playoffs. Fangio has been the head coach for two seasons, but has gone from a record 7-9 in 2019 to 5-11 in 2020.
