Jessica Simpson does not expect an “apology from Justin Timberlake” from ex-boyfriend John Mayer.
The singer and actress, 40 years old, promoted the launch of Open the book in brochure at Tamron Hall Show and a peek reveals that she was asked if she wanted Mayer to do a public mea culpa for her – as Timberlake did with ex Britney Spears recently. In Simpson’s memoirs, which originally came out last year, she called the guitarist “emotionally manipulative” and his intermittent relationship “dysfunctional”.
“No, I definitely don’t feel like I owe a public apology,” Simpson told Hall. “I mean, you can’t go back.”
Simpson called himself “a very merciful person,” but added, “I’m also honest. So in the memoirs, if I’m going to talk about things that have caused me pain, I’m going to be honest about it. And it was a time in my life when I was very manipulated and also very passionate, or apparently. “
She said now that she has “Eric’s love”, referring to her six-year-old husband Eric Johnson, she knows that true love is “such a different thing”.
So, “I wouldn’t expect an apology. I don’t think there is a need for an apology,” said Simpson before pointing out that, “He might not regret it – and that’s okay. We were kind of on and off at the time. . But talking about someone sexually is kind of disrespectful, but I mean it’s their fault. “
In Simpson’s memoirs, she wrote that she and Mayer, who dated between 2006 and 2010, separated “almost nine times” over the course of their relationship. The “disrespectful” comments were the ones he made detailing his sex life for Playboy in 2010. He infamously called her “sexual napalm” and said she was like “crack to me”. He publicly apologized at the time, and later called himself an “idiot” for discussing Simpson and other ex-boyfriends in interviews.
Simpson wrote that he met Mayer in 2005 – in the midst of his troubled marriage to Nick Lachey – and they started exchanging intimate notes. After she and Lachey filed for divorce in November, she started dating Mayer, who “told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally”. However, she said that he made her insecure and she “constantly worried that I wasn’t smart enough for him”. These insecurities encouraged her to drink, which became a problem in her life. She has been sober since 2017.
In the book, she gave him credit for publicly apologizing for Playboy comments, but said he did not accept. She wrote that the humiliation that made headlines was what led her to end all contact with him forever. She deleted his contact, changed his number and his email. (“I broke up with this man in a way I never thought possible,” she wrote in her book.)
Months later, she met Johnson, who is the father of her three children.
