This is not the Rebecca Black you remember from 2011.

Ah, 2011, somehow you look like you were a century ago, instead of a decade ago. That was the year Charlie Sheen was “winning”, Adele was rolling in the background, Kim Kardashian was ending her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, Beyoncé was announcing her pregnancy and Kate and Wills’ royal wedding was going on, with Kate the Sister Pippa’s ass playing a disproportionate role. And in February 2011, a 13-year-old girl named Rebecca Black released a music video, forever cementing its place in the history of viral video and give the best day of the week an irresistible caterpillar.
Black’s success came when his family paid her $ 4,000 to make the video as a birthday present. But, really, it was a gift for all of us, to unwrap letters like “I have to eat my bowl, I have to eat cereal” and “Tomorrow is Saturday, and Sunday comes after wurrrrrrrrrrds”. The video now has 149 million views on YouTube.
Now, Black is 23, and this week she released a remix of the song that couldn’t be further from the sweet and innocent original. The remix features rapper Big Freedia, singer Dorian Electra and electronic duo 3OH! 3 joining Black, who wears a tight black outfit, nails like daggers, a pointed collar and cuffs and a long black and blue braid. The video itself includes an automatically adjusted but still recognizable version of Friday, complete with images of the original music overlaid with a modern update and full of memes from the video.
The 10th anniversary remix is also timely. On February 8, the original Friday was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, for selling more than 500,000 units.
The remix gained over 1 million views in just one day. It is not yet the original territory of Friday, but everyone is looking forward to the weekend.
