IPhone 13 is rumored to use Samsung LPTO monitors with 120 Hz support

Based on recent rumors, Apple will finally introduce new iPhone models later this year with 120Hz support. A new report from He c today it corroborates that Apple is in fact moving to adopt new LTPO monitors on the so-called iPhone 13, which will allow higher update rates and lower power consumption.

According to a survey by UBI Research obtained by He c, Samsung Display will convert its line of OLED monitors into LTPO, which are expected to be delivered to Apple later this year. Samsung is currently the leading supplier of OLED screens used on iPhones, so it makes sense for the South Korean company to adjust its production to meet Apple’s demands.

Samsung’s screen will convert its OLED line dedicated to its largest customer, Apple, into one that manufactures low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistors in the first half of 2021, according to the research firm UBI Research.

LTPO monitors are known to consume less energy than a normal OLED display, which is the main reason why Apple already uses this technology in the Apple Watch. LTPO also supports variable screen refresh rates, up to 120 Hz – a feature that many users have been waiting for.

The report mentions that Samsung will finish converting its OLED display production to LTPO in the first half of 2021. At present, Samsung Display can guarantee 30,000 OLED LTPO display substrates per month to Apple, a smaller number when compared to the production of regular display.

Samsung Display completed the conversion of A3 to Y-Octa last year. As soon as the entire conversion to LTPO TFT is completed in the first half of 2021, the production capacity of the line will be reduced to 70,000 substrates per month compared to the previous 105,000.

Earlier this month, trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple is bringing this new display technology to the cutting edge models – iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The analyst also believes that the new iPhones will show significant improvements in camera and keep the Lightning connector.
