MP Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Said on Friday that she was concerned about the White House’s “legal justification” for launching air strikes in Syria the day before without Congressional approval.
“We in Congress have Congressional oversight of involvement in the war and we have not yet been informed and we have not authorized the war in Syria,” Omar told CNN.
Omar retweeted a post reappeared in 2017 by now White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who questioned the Trump administration’s “legal authority” to conduct air strikes against the “sovereign” country at the time.

“Great question,” Omar responded to the four-year-old tweet in light of the Biden government’s military action announced on Thursday.
“Her question was important when it was a different government and that question still remains with that government,” Omar told John King of CNN. “Our ability to participate in constitutional actions does not diminish when the ruling party is ours.”

Lawmakers on both sides of the corridor criticized the strike, including Republicans Nancy Mace, RS.C .; Jim Banks, R-Ind .; Rand Paul, R-Ky .; and Lauren Boebert, R-Colo .; and Democratic MP Ro Khanna, D-Calif .; and Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn .; and Tim Kaine, D-Va.
“While the president has a responsibility to defend the people of the United States, our constitution makes it clear that it is Congress, not the president, who has the authority to declare war,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. in a statement on Friday, adding in a tweet that he was “very concerned about last night’s attack by American forces in Syria”.
