Huawei founder reveals plan to avoid U.S. sanctions
Even without GMS, the Duo will work on the Huawei P40 Pro until March 31
Note that Duo code strings refer to unsupported devices, as opposed to non-certified devices, such as Messaging. Although unsupported phones do not obey the Google Mobile Service ecosystem and are treated basically the same as non-certified models, the difference is that after the Duo shuts down for these devices on March 31, there will be a grace period of 14 days during which users be able to save and download their Duo data before the service is terminated.
Meanwhile, Huawei founder Ren Zhenfei gave a speech last June explaining how Huawei could survive the U.S.-imposed sanctions. The speech was published last week and ended in the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Zhenfei, who is also Huawei’s CEO, said the company needs to decentralize its operations, focus on making profits, simplifying product lines and freezing payments for three to five years. The 76-year-old said the U.S. actions against Huawei made it difficult for the company to put its original globalization plans into action and forced Huawei to develop its own production lines. As Zhenfei said, “There is a great incompatibility between our ability and strategy. It is our weak link and we are forced to start from the beginning as elementary school students.”
Zhenfei says Huawei will not be defeated, nor will it resent the United States. Speaking to Huawei over the summer, Ren said: “Please do not be upset because of temporary US pressure or give up on our globalization strategy. There is no future without embracing globalization (in development and research).” having to motivate employees while keeping wages frozen for the next three to five years, Ren said Huawei needs to focus on financial results. “We must gradually shift the focus from the top line to the bottom line. All product lines … we must not blindly seek to become number 1 … we cannot always strive to be number 1,” said Ren. “We must create value and reasonable profits to ensure healthy growth.” So, instead of worrying about the number of units Huawei is shipping, the company’s founder says it needs to focus on profitability.
According to Ren, the US wants Huawei to die. He said: “At first, we thought we could have done something wrong accordingly and we did a self-examination; but then the second blow and the third blow followed. Then we realized that they want our death … but the desire to survive has also motivated us “.
