How does COVID affect the lungs? “Post-COVID lungs look worse than any type of terrible smoker’s lung we’ve ever seen,” says the Texas trauma surgeon

Texas trauma surgeon Dr. Brittany Bankhead-Kendall says it is a rarity that any of her X-rays from COVID-19 patients return without dense scars.

In one of her Twitter posts, she says that “post-greed lungs look worse than any kind of terrible smoker’s lung we’ve ever seen”.

“Everyone is so concerned with the issue of mortality and that is terrible and terrible. But man, and all the survivors and people who tested positive, that will be a problem, ”said Dr. Bankhead-Kendall.

COVID ‘long haulers’: some who first saw mild symptoms experiencing debilitating problems months later

Like many, she has treated thousands of patients since March.

Of them, she told CBS 11 News that those who had symptoms of COVID-19 show a severe chest X-ray every time. And those who were asymptomatic show a severe chest X-ray 70% to 80% of the time.

“There are still people who say ‘I’m fine, I have no problems’ and you take the chest X-ray and they have a bad chest X-ray,” she said.

Here is a picture of a normal lung, a smoker’s lung and a COVID-19 lung that Dr. Bankhead-Kendall shared with CBS 11 News.

The healthy lungs are clean with the black representing the air. In the smoker’s lung, the white lines are indicative of scarring and congestion. While the COVID lung is filled with white.

“You will see many of these dense white scars or all over the lung. And if you are not feeling any problems now, the fact that it is on your chest X-ray is certainly indicative of you, possibly having problems later,” said Dr Bankhead-Kendall.

She said it is too early to know the extent of the impact of COVID-19 on your body or if the scar will heal, however, she said that it is important that if you are short of breath after the COVID-19 has disappeared, stay in touch with your primary care doctor.
