WASHINGTON – House Democrats are planning to present at least one impeachment article against President Donald Trump on Monday for “inciting insurrection” when his supporters violently violated the Capitol last Wednesday.
Members will reveal the article and other resolutions during a Chamber session at 11 am ET.
The majority leader in the House, Steny Hoyer, D-Md., Will present a resolution prepared by Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., Which invites Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, Mayor Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a letter to her caucus on Sunday night. Hoyer needs unanimous consent to approve the measure, and if any members block it, Democrats will vote in the plenary on Tuesday.
“We are asking the vice president to respond within 24 hours,” said Pelosi in his letter, which said Democrats would seek impeachment legislation to follow.
The “incitement to insurrection” impeachment article will be presented by Raskin and Reps. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., And David Cicilline, DR.I., along with more than 200 Democratic co-sponsors. The measure says Trump “has demonstrated that he will remain a threat to national security, democracy and the constitution if he is allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with self-government and the rule of law.”
“President Trump guarantees impeachment and trial, removal from office and disqualification to occupy and enjoy any position of honor, trust or profit under the United States,” says the resolution.
Deputy Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Also prepared two impeachment articles related to Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol and Trump’s call to Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, in which the president asked him to revoke the Biden’s victory in the state.
Freshman deputy Cori Bush, D-Mo., Plans to present a resolution “to expel members who voted to overturn the election and incite a white supremacist coup that left people dead. They violated the 14th Amendment,” she said in a tweet on Sunday. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, DD.C., also plans to reveal a resolution that would censor Trump.
House Democrats are due to hold a conference call at 2 pm Eastern Time on Monday about their “response to the violent attack on the Capitol.”
Pelosi and other Democratic House leaders did not explicitly say which impeachment articles the House will vote on, if any, and the first vote on any article will take place on Wednesday. Democrats overwhelmingly expressed support for the effort and streamlined it as Trump approaches his final days in office.
Even if the House impeachment Trump this week, the earliest the Senate could begin to take office would be January 19, according to a memo released by Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Unless all 100 senators agree to return early.
