Becerra said leadership at the federal level is needed to ensure that vaccine implantation and state efforts to control the virus are effective and controlled smoothly.
“But first you have to rescue people, you have to rescue the economy,” he said, adding, “President Biden made it clear: it won’t happen overnight.”
“We can’t just tell the states, here are some PPE, some masks, here are some vaccines, now go ahead,” added the HHS nominee.
His comments came in response to questions about comments made by Biden, suggesting that there was little the United States could do to dull the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic in the coming months.
“There is nothing we can do to change the path of the pandemic in the coming months,” said Biden on Friday.
The Biden administration has promised a more practical approach to combat the spread of COVID-19 in contrast to the Trump administration’s largely state-centered approach to vaccine distribution.
During his first week in office, Biden signed a series of executive orders, including orders dealing with the pandemic, such as one requiring travelers to wear masks at airports.
