Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office releases images of deputies serving a warrant after Dolal Idd’s death

When deputies enter the house, at least two women are seen kneeling on the floor of the room with their hands up. A shirtless man is seen coming down the stairs and is directed to the living room. A woman can be heard saying to deputies: “I have small children”.

In the next few minutes, deputies are seen gathering the rest of the occupants in the living room. In total, four women, two men and three boys appear to be in the house.

One of the women tells the deputies that one of the children has special needs and, at some point, the deputy with the body chamber carries a small child from the stairs to the room.

One of the women asks if deputies can tell them something about the search and at one point asks about a “shooting in Minneapolis”. A deputy warns that investigators will arrive to speak with them and that “we don’t know” if the search had anything to do with the shooting.

About 14 minutes of video, the police begin to tie up the adults in the living room. A woman asks, “Are you going to zip the kids?” and a deputy replies, “No”. One of the women calls deputies “racist b * tches” as they arrest people in the room.

A policeman calls to say, “Make sure the 18-year-old is handcuffed behind his back.” He was the only one in the video who appeared to be handcuffed behind his back. He was also the only one who appeared to have been searched.

At around 20 minutes, one of the deputies asks if anyone needs medical attention. Nobody answered. The deputy with the body camera then circulates and writes down each person’s name and date of birth, and the video ends shortly after the deputy walks out the front door.

The search of the house came the next morning after police shot and killed Idd during a shootout at around 6:15 pm on Wednesday at a Holiday gas station on 36th Street East with Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis.

The footage of the camera next to the body that the Minneapolis Police Department released the day after the shooting shows police cars fighting in a white sedan in the gas station parking lot. The glass in the driver’s window appears to shatter and the police start shooting at the vehicle.

Idd was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman in the passenger seat came out unscathed and no police were injured, the police said.

Bodycam video released in 24 hours, part of the emerging MPD trend

This was the second video of the body’s camera to be released this week in connection with Idd in what appears to be an effort to maintain transparency after the first police killing since George Floyd’s death on May 25. The Minneapolis Police Department released the video of the shooting in 24 hours. The search warrant video was posted just over two days after it happened.

In a statement, Sheriff Hutchinson said he made the video of the operation available to clarify allegations that people in the house were treated inhumanly. Many of these criticisms were made within the Muslim community.

The Minnesota section of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) released a statement on Thursday accusing the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office of misconduct during the operation and called for a “transparent investigation”. The statement said the “terrifying domestic invasion … could have resulted in tragedy”.

Senator-elect Omar Fateh, DFL-Minneapolis, whose Senate district covers the gas station where Idd was shot, said MPs handcuffed Idd’s family during the search and only told them about his death after the investigation was over.

“This type of treatment for a bereaved family is inhuman and unfair,” said Fateh in a statement. “The police have lost public trust, especially in the BIPOC communities. My heart aches for Dolal Idd’s family.”
