Heavy rain brings flooding to parts of Miami-Dade and Broward, causing confusion for daily passengers

MIAMI – Parts of southern Florida remain flooded after intense storms flooded the region on Tuesday, generating a flood alert in Miami and a flood alert in other areas.

Torrential rain soaked Miami for several hours, starting around 3 pm on Tuesday. Rain rates were sometimes five to seven centimeters an hour.

Doppler radar estimates show that 10 to 15 centimeters of rain fell in Miami, Miami Beach and Surfside.

Cars began to stop in downtown Miami as they drove up North Miami Avenue near Northeast 20th Street.

The Edgewater area experiences consistent flooding whenever bad weather passes, and Tuesday at Biscayne Boulevard and 23rd Street was no different. Parked cars could be seen stuck in several inches of water.

After a rainy day in Miami Beach, cars were still sailing on flooded roads for the night ride.

A strong storm also hit Broward County and prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Warning for some neighborhoods. Pompano Beach had more than three inches of rain on Tuesday.

The storms also left thousands of people in Broward without a water supply after lightning struck the county’s main pumping station, leading to the boiling water for thousands of homes.

Betty Davis, a certified local chief meteorologist 10, says a cold, slow front is interacting with the hot, humid air of South Florida. The end result is rounds of rain.

The front will still be in the vicinity of South Florida and the Keys overnight Tuesday through Wednesday. The region may experience more rain and storms.
