‘Grease’ star Olivia Newton-John defends film after viewers label it ‘sexist’

Olivia Newton-John spoke out against fans who recently criticized her iconic film “Grease”, calling it sexist and misogynist.

“I think it’s kind of silly,” said the 72-year-old on the podcast A Life Of Greatness. “I mean, this film was made in the 1970s over the 1950s.”

Newton-John played student Sandy Olsson, who falls in love with local bad boy Danny Zuko (John Travolta).

“Grease” aired on Christmas 2020 on the BBC and prompted people to voice their opinions on Twitter, according to UK Express.

One person said, “The drive-in / spoiled make-out session between Danny and Sandy didn’t age well. The film kind of slides straight into the song (” Sandy “) before viewers register the rapey vibe of the scene they just finished. see # Grease. “

Another said, “Ahhh man. Just watching #Grease one of my favorite movies and it’s so from your time. Misogynist, sexist and a little bit violent.”

Someone said that there was very little diversity on the screen. “There were no black actors or students at the school,” they wrote.

Newton-John pointed out: “It was a play, it is a musical, it is fun. It is a fun musical not to be taken too seriously.”

The actress added that people on the Internet “need to relax a little and enjoy things as they are … I think it’s a fun movie that entertains people”.

Newton-John, who has been fighting cancer since 2017, recently told People magazine: “I don’t think I imagined living that long! I feel very blessed.”

She noted how she is “feeling great” and also discussed how her husband, John Easterling, helped her in her battle with breast cancer with cannabis use.

“I am very lucky to be married to a wonderful man who is a vegetable healer, and he has great knowledge,” she described.

Newton-John is looking forward to his daughter Chloe’s wedding. The singer gushed, “She’s my reason for being.”
