Gran Turismo Sport has turned Sony’s flagship racing simulation series into an extremely popular e-sport and has therefore succeeded in boosting the brand. However, fans of the series regretted the lack of a full-featured player campaign, as in previous entries; the RPG-inspired way of collecting cars from previous titles was, after all, a big part of the brand’s long-term success.
We already know that Gran Turismo 7 on PlayStation 5 will be a combination of “past, present and future”, which means it will include a complete solo mode. However, in an interview with journalist Toshifumi Watanabe for Octane Japan – as translated by GT Planet – the creator of the Kazunori Yamauchi series reiterated that we can expect a more traditional experience this time around.
“When inheriting elements like the [FIA] championship held at GT Sport, Gran Turismo 7 will return to the real purpose of full volumes as [Gran Turismo] 1-4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience at the moment, ”he said. The translation is a little strange, but we are sure that you can infer what he means here.
To be honest, this seems like the next natural step for the franchise. Obviously, the e-sports aspect isn’t going anywhere – and multiplayer has been so successful on PS4 that we wouldn’t like it – but building a more traditional player experience from there should benefit the overall package, and we think this will be great success when it launched on PS5 later this year.
