Sophie Xeon, a Grammy-nominated pop artist and visionary producer who worked at SOPHIE, died in a “terrible accident” in Athens, Greece on Saturday, the artist’s label said. SOPHIE was 34 years old.
“Tragically, our beautiful Sophie passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to her spirituality, she climbed to see the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell,” said the record labels Transgressive Records and Future Classic in a statement. “She will always be here with us. The family thanks everyone for their love and support and asks for privacy in this devastating time.”
SOPHIE worked with artists like Madonna, Vince Staples, Charli XCX and Nicki Minaj. The musician’s most notable work with Charli XCX includes her VROOM VROOM EP and the song “After The Afterparty”.
In 2018, SOPHIE released a first studio album entitled Oil of each pearl inside. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance / Electronic Album of that year.
SOPHIE was born in Glasglow, Scotland, and has spent much of his career performing anonymously – usually in the dark or in a DJ booth.
In an interview with PAPER Mag in 2018, SOPHIE talked about his debut single and music video for “It’s Okay To Cry” and talked about embracing transnity.
“For me, transness is taking control to bring your body more in line with your soul and spirit, so that the two do not fight against each other and struggle to survive,” SOPHIE told the magazine. “In this land, it is that you can get closer to how you feel it is your true essence without the social pressures of having to fulfill certain traditional gender-based roles.”
Artists from across the music industry mourned the death of SOPHIE.
