Burr, a retiring Republican, voted to condemn former President Trump on Saturday with the only article to incite an insurrection in the United States Capitol earlier this year.
“The evidence is convincing that President Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection against a co-equal branch of the government and that the prosecution reaches the level of crimes and misdemeanors,” Burr said in a statement on Saturday. “So I voted to condemn.”
Hours later, the North Carolina Republican Party condemned Burr, aligning himself with the former president.
“North Carolina Republicans sent Senator Burr to the United States Senate to defend the Constitution and his vote today to condemn a trial he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” said the party president.

A poll done late last year showed Lara Trump as the favorite among potential Republican candidates in the primaries to fill Burr’s vacancy. She is married to the son of former President Eric and was one of the main substitutes in both the 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
Graham, a loyal leader to Trump in the Republican caucus, also said on Sunday that Congress “opened a Pandora’s box for future presidents” and “abused” the model of controlling legislative power over the executive.
