Google is testing a new background for the Assistant’s smart displays that shows a cartoon frog enjoying or dealing with the weather in real time. The character, Froggy, was previously a constant presence in Google’s climate search results and also appeared as a secondary character in several Google Doodles. Now 9to5Google reports that the creature is randomly emerging as a new “Photo Frame” option for smart monitors for Reddit users and Twitter, where it appears next to existing backgrounds, such as images displayed in your Google Photos account.
The software describes the screensaver as “an adorable frog to bring you an animated weather experience”. When activated, the display shows the current climate, a two-day weather forecast and a Froggy animation under the current conditions. 9to5Google notes that these animations include Froggy sunbathing when the weather is nice or hiding under a vase when it is raining.
Froggy has appeared on smart monitors since at least September of last year. When available more widely, the background will appear as an option in response to the voice command “Ok Google, change the photo frame”.
