Google Maps finally decided to support dark mode on Android 539 days after the official launch of Android 10. The latest blog post from Google says that dark mode on Google Maps is “expanding soon for all Android users globally” , making the resource official after many public experiments.
Google’s uneven distribution strategy makes it difficult to determine when any feature is officially “launched”. Some users have been in dark mode for some time, through various experiments and initial releases. Google has been causing a dark mode for Google Maps since October 2019, and experimental launches hit some users in September 2020. Google Maps has also been showing a dark color map in navigation mode for some time, but this is not the same thing as a comprehensive dark mode for all elements of the user interface.
If Google Maps is following Android best practices, the UI he must automatically switch to the dark theme if the system settings have dark mode enabled. Google says that you will also find a new “theme” section in your Google Maps settings, where you can switch the feature manually. The dark mode of Google Maps, which has been floating for a while, is on a server-side switch. The code is already on your device, so there is no version that we can target to activate dark mode; you just need to wait for Google to sign your account.
With Google Maps finally in dark mode, this should cover all of Google’s top apps. The Play Store, Gmail, Google Assistant, Chrome, Calendar, Drive, Photos and YouTube support dark mode.
