God of War has been updated to take full advantage of the PlayStation 5 and the results are phenomenal. For those in need of a recap, the game ran at 30 frames per second in 1080p on a standard PlayStation 4, but the PS4 Pro offered two options: Resolution or Framerate. In Resolution mode, the game used checkered rendering techniques to produce a clean 4K image at 30 frames per second – or you could reduce the resolution to 1080p and run it at 60 frames per second in Framerate mode.
The problem is that, at least on a PS4 Pro, the frame rate rarely reaches 60 frames per second, ranging from 40 frames per second to 50 frames per second. Playing on a PS5 caught the frame rate at 60 frames per second, but you still had to deal with a 1080p image. Now the new patch allows you to play in 4K checkerboard at a solid 60 frames per second, without noticeable drops or fluctuations. The image quality is extremely sharp and the performance never fails.
The comparison video above demonstrates how good an upgrade is – it really looks wonderful running on a PS5 right now. We sincerely hope that more developers will follow these steps and update their PS4 classics so they can sing on the new Sony console. This is brilliant.
