Gmail and other apps are crashing on Android, but there is a fix

If apps like Gmail and Google Pay recently crashed on your Android phone, you’re not alone – it seems to be a widespread problem.

Numerous user reports on Downdetector indicate that there are problems with Gmail, and reports on Reddit speak of Gmail “locking up” since Monday. In addition, the Google workspace status panel said the company is “aware of an issue with Gmail that affects a significant subset of users”.

The problem, which appears to stem from a system application called Android System WebView, has now been fixed.

It looked ugly for a moment, but it is improving quickly.

“The problem with Gmail has been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Rest assured that system reliability is one of Google’s top priorities and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.” said Google in a note on the Workspace Status Panel.

To correct the problem, users must update Google Chrome and the Android WebView system through Google Play. To do this, open the Play Store app, search for Android System WebView and click “Update”. Then repeat the process for Google Chrome.
