Georgia signs Will Muschamp to support the team

Kirby Smart is meeting Will Muschamp for the third time. Smart told reporters via Zoom on Wednesday that he called on Muschamp to join his team in an off-field role as a defensive analyst. Muschamp was dismissed from South Carolina’s coaching position in November.

“He will train the coaches,” said Smart when asked about Muschamp.

Muschamp declined the opportunity to become the defensive coordinator in Texas a few days ago and will return to his alma mater, where he will see many of his eldest son. Jackson Muschamp is in his first year as a Bulldog substitute quarterback.

After a five-year career at UGA, which started as an assistant, Muschamp started his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant at Auburn in 1995. He spent two years there before training defenders in western Georgia in 1998 and eastern Kentucky. in 1999. Chris Hatcher hired him as a defense technician and defense coordinator at Valdosta State in 2000 and this was the first time that he and Smart had the chance to train on the same team.

Muschamp was part of the hiring process that brought Smart to VSU, where the current UGA coach helped with his defensive back. Muschamp left Valdosta State to train LSU linebackers under Nick Saban in 2001 and Smart was promoted to defensive coordinator for Valdosta State. Saban promoted Muschamp to defensive coordinator at LSU in 2002 and spent three years in that role, helping the Tigers to a National Championship in 2003. Smart and Muschamp met in 2004 with the latter calling the defense and the former training the secondary.

When Saban jumped into the NFL to coach the Miami Dolphins in 2005, Muschamp made the change with him as the defense coach. Smart spent the 2005 season at UGA, training running backs. After a year in Miami, Muschamp served for two seasons as a defensive coordinator in Auburn and two more seasons in the same role in Texas, where he was named “head coach of the wait” under Mack Brown. Before that came to pass, Muschamp was hired as a head coach in Florida in 2011. He spent four years there, accumulating a 28-21 record.

In 2015, Muschamp was Auburn’s defensive coordinator, but was hired at the end of the season to become the coach of South Carolina. He accepted the job in the same year that Smart became the head coach of UGA. Muschamp was 28-30 as the leader of the Gamecocks program. Muschamp’s days as a university coach saw him win 2-6 against Georgia. He is a native of Rome, Georgia and a product of the Darlington School.
