Georgia Republicans reassign Republican lawmakers who supported Trump’s election fraud allegations

Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan on Tuesday changed the state senate committee’s assignments to Senators Matt Brass, Brandon Beach and Burt Jones, all of whom joined President Donald Trump’s efforts to undermine the results in Georgia.

Beach was removed from his chairmanship of the transportation committee and Jones was removed from the chairmanship of the insurance and labor committee. Brass was relocated to the Banking and Financial Institutions Committee, rather than remaining head of the politically influential Repartitioning and Redistricting Committee, according to Macy McFall, deputy chief of staff and director of communications for Duncan’s office.

The downgrade was expected by Jones, who told CNN that “he had a different opinion” from Duncan, who vehemently rejected the allegations of electoral fraud in Peach State.

“It didn’t bother me, except for the effort to try to embarrass us and it really bothers me,” said Jones on Thursday. “It was really unnecessary and very stingy.”

He noted that this is the first time since his first year in office in 2013 that he has not held the presidency. Jones also said that he and the other two senators did not want to overturn the election results, but wanted a deeper investigation into possible problems in the state’s voting process.

“We were not trying to overturn an election,” he told CNN. “You have to have evidence to overturn an election, but in order to have evidence you have to investigate things.”

He added that his aim was to “call” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, who consistently rejected Trump’s allegations of electoral fraud.

Brass and Beach did not immediately respond to CNN’s requests for comment.

Republicans hold the majority in the Georgia Senate, with more than 30 seats out of a total of 56 in the House.

Jones, along with Beach, applauded Texas federal action that seeks to overthrow President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in key states, including Georgia. Legislators at the time claimed “misconduct, fraud and irregularities during the voting process”. The action that ended up being denied.

“We are the people’s curators and we must guarantee their vote against all those, both foreign and national, who would defraud them from their collective decision at the polls,” said the December statement.

McFall said the new state Senate committee assignments take effect immediately.

“These committee chairs are uniquely qualified to develop real and lasting solutions designed to build a better Georgia,” said Duncan in a statement on Tuesday. “The Senate will continue to prioritize the committee’s diligent work and sound public policies, and I look forward to working closely with each of our presidents and their committee members as we work to enact policies that promote lives and livelihoods of all Georgians. “
