George Clooney and his wife Amal gave their children traditional names to save them more attention as famous children, he explained in a new interview with AARP.

In the virtual conversation, George, 59, who directed and starred in the Netflix sci-fi movie The midnight sky, spoke warmly about family life, including his habit of writing letters to Amal, 42, and why they called their three-year-old twin sons Alexander and Ella.

“I didn’t want strange names for our children,” he told the outlet. “They are going to have enough problems already. It is difficult to be the son of someone famous and successful. “He explained:” Paul Newman’s son killed himself. Gregory Peck’s son killed himself. Bing Crosby had two children who killed themselves. I have an advantage because I’m so much older that when my son feels competitive, I will literally be chewing bread. “

George became a father in 2017, news that the couple announced with humor. “… Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and well. George is sedated and is expected to recover in a few days. ”It seemed a blink of an eye for the actor’s age and his reputation as a bachelor – although he was previously married to actress Talia Balsam (from 1989 to 1993), and dated women like Renée Zellweger and Elisabetta Canalis, George avoided long-term commitments. deadline. Well, until Amal appears in 2013.

“I was like, ‘I’m never going to get married. ‘I’m not going to have kids,’ ”said George GQ in November. “I’m going to work, I have great friends, my life is full, I’m fine. And I didn’t know how empty it was until I met Amal. And then everything changed. And I said, ‘Oh, actually, this has been a huge empty space.’ “

The actor raised the issue in April 2014, less than a year after meeting the human rights lawyer through a mutual friend. And he adapted to fatherhood with similar ease, calling it “gratifying”.

Making family memories so important, said George, that during their annual weekend getaways with Amal (presumably before the coronavirus pandemic), they wrote detailed letters to their children about the trip.

The couple also exchange letters every few months. “Even in the block, I will write a letter and put it on her desk, or she will write a letter and leave it under the pillow,” said George AARP. “I am a big believer in letters. I have letters from Paul Newman, Walter Cronkite, Gregory Peck. I framed them. I put them in the house. If it were a text, it would be different. Maybe it’s a generational thing, and maybe it won’t be like that 20 years from now, but for me, someone sat down and wrote. “
