Geddy Lee from Rush on Neil Peart: “He was a monster drummer of the highest magnitude”

GEDDY LEE from RUSH in NEIL PEART:

Just over a year after the death of HURRY drummer Neil Peart, his bandmate for more than four decades, singer and bassist Geddy Lee opened up to Rolling Stone about his friend in an extensive interview.

When asked if there were times when he was truly impressed with things that Neil designed or was just working technically, Geddy he replied: “Regularly. I never met a musician like him. He was a monster drummer of the highest magnitude. I met some great musicians, but I had the pleasure of seeing him every night on stage and seeing him improvise, how he got older, through its soils. “

Lee he continued: “When he became determined to add improvisation as part of his drum solo every night, it was a bold and courageous step for him and the level of complexity at which he acted. I don’t know many other musicians who can work on that level. So for me, I was always trying to live up to his watermark, so to speak, because he put pressure on me. He said the same thing about me, but of course, I always thought, ‘No, no, I ‘ I’m following you. ‘”

He added: “[Peart] set the bar too high for himself, and when his body started to disappoint him, he worried about betraying it. He was very good at that. He used to say all the time that he never wanted to disappoint the child inside him. “

Lee also talked about Pearthealth problems, especially during HURRYfinal tour of, “R40”, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of Neil joining the band.

“He fought during this tour,” Geddy said. “He had a lot of weird problems, physical problems, a tendency to get infections. He was so fucking stoic. He would never let you, you know … You saw him limping or something and you would say, ‘Dude, what’s going on in?’ ‘Oh, shit … I need to tell you.’ “But you had to guess if he had a cold, because he didn’t complain about that kind of thing. He was just the opposite of me. When I have something wrong, everyone in the fucking organization knows I have something wrong.” [Laughs] I really tried to teach him how to complain, but he just couldn’t learn. “

Peart he died on January 7, 2020 in Santa Monica, California, after a three-year battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 67 years old.

HURRY announced Peartit is passing three days later, causing shock waves and a wave of grief from fans and musicians around the world.

HURRYThe final show was held at the Forum in Los Angeles on August 1, 2015. Peart at the time he indicated that he wanted to retire while he was still playing well, in addition to wishing to spend more time at home with his daughter.

Peart joined HURRY in 1974. He was considered one of the best rock drummers of all time, alongside John Bonham of LED ZEPPELIN; Keith Moon of WHO; and Ginger Baker of CREAM. Peart It was also HURRYthe main lyricist, taking inspiration from everything from science fiction to Ayn Rand.
