When gaming lifestyle company Razer showed its concept for the Project Hazel N95 facial respirator earlier this year at CES, it had only been a few weeks since the first coronavirus vaccines have been approved for emergency use. But even now, with thoughts about a post-pandemic future starting to take shape, it seems that Razer sees a future for high-tech personal protective equipment.

Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan told Yahoo Finance this week that Project Hazel’s mask will become a reality.

“We were thinking, this is a conceptual project and it will be relevant when vaccines and everything is implemented,” Tan told the publication. “I think that, moving forward, we have decided – and I can say now – that we are going to proceed to make this a reality and send the smart mask.”

“We realized that even with vaccinations, we are hearing that you still need to be masked because there is still a risk factor that even if you are vaccinated, you still need to be extremely careful,” said Tan, and added that many countries may still be a year or two away from being fully vaccinated.

Tan did not say when the masks would go into production. Razer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The high-tech design Hazel mask design praised at CES is transparent and has internal LED lights to make your mouth visible in low light conditions. It uses replaceable filters and rechargeable fans in its two breathing capsules. You can adjust the amount of airflow and the pods have built-in audio processing algorithms to make your voice sound clearer and more natural.

The mask also has active ventilation and self-sterilization; a separate box that can charge you wirelessly; and a UV sterilizer. And the cocoons have illuminated rings that indicate the status of the charge.
