HBO has put in place a series adaptation of Tales of Dunk & Egg, a prequel to War of Thrones, based on the fantasy novel series by George RR Martin.
Tales of Dunk & Egg is one of a handful of new Got prequel projects that are circulating on HBO, since the network intends to have several Got-universe shows in the air, gathering prequel Dragon House, which has a direct order for the series and is set to debut in 2022.
Set in Martin’s world A song of ice and fire in which War of Thrones is based, the series would follow the adventures of Dunk (Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (the future king Aegon V. Taregaryen), about 90 years before the events of A song of ice and fire, sources close to the project say Deadline.
The project is under development and a writer has not yet been hired. HBO declined to comment.
Dragon House was the second War of Thrones prequela to receive green light, following a project written by Jane Goldman, which was for the pilot starring Naomi Watts, but was not chosen for the series. They were among half a dozen different prequel projects that were developed at HBO. Except for Dragon House, the others in that lot did not go ahead.
Martin published three novels – The Hedge Knight (1998), The sworn sword (2003), and The mysterious knight (2010). The three novels were published together in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on October 6, 2015.
Deadline’s sister pub, Variety, was the first to report the project.
