HBO has more ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel going on, including one from ‘Roma’ creator Bruno Heller and another about the legendary founder of Dorne
HBO is developing three most War of Thrones prequel projects.
The network has a trio of additional ideas in the works based on the fantasy world of author George RR Martin, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.
One of the projects, provisional title 9 trips, it’s from Pomegranate creator Bruno Heller and follows Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as The Sea Snake, Lord of the Tides and head of Casa Velaryon. The character also appears at the next green light Took prequela Dragon House, where he is played by actor Steve Toussaint. Therefore, this effort represents a potential spinoff for a character in a series that has not yet been filmed (much less aired).
A second project, provisional title 10,000 ships, revolves around warrior queen Princess Nymeria, a revered ancestor of Casa Martell who founded the kingdom of Dorne (she became so legendary in the kingdom that two characters took her name in the original series – Sand Snake Nymeria Sand and Arya’s direwolf). Its history takes place about 1,000 years before the events in War of Thrones, making it much older in the Westeros timeline than any of the other previously announced projects in progress (HBO filmed a prequel movie in 2019 set even further back during Age of Heroes, but never made it to the series) . Furthermore, War of Thrones added a storyline involving Dorne in the middle of the series that fans felt struggling to feel like an organic part of the show. If it got the green light, the Nymeria project could give an entirely new and redemptive view of Solar Spear.
The third project takes place in Flea Bottom’s famous King’s Landing slum – the maze of narrow streets in the capital where characters like Davos Seaworth and Gendry Baratheon were born.
Projects are additional to the next green light series Dragon House, which starts shooting in the UK in April and stars Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine and Matt Smith. Dragon follows the history of Casa Targaryen 300 years before the events in Took and leads to an epic civil war that destroyed Westeros. The series is by co-showrunners Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal, scheduled to open in 2022.
Another HBO project previously reported in development is based on Martin’s popular soap opera Dunk and Egg, which followed the adventures of walking knight Sor Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who would later become King Aegon V Targaryen. In addition, there is a lively Game of Thrones project being considered on a topic that has not yet been revealed. The wave of projects is part of post-HBOTook comes to try to replace the incredible popularity of the program, especially now that it is totally immersed in the streaming wars with HBO Max.
“The way we try to approach it is not because [saying], ‘We need five programs in three years’, but ‘What are the stories worth telling?’ “HBO content director Casey Bloys told THR in January.” We have developed several approaches in different worlds. What I want to do is what I think is the best creatively. I prefer to talk about the stories and the showrunners and their vision, rather than reaching some arbitrary target for the right number of programs. “
