Former South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, fired during his fifth season with Gamecocks last fall, joined the Kirby Smart program at the University of Georgia, according to AJC. It is not known in what capacity Muschamp was hired.
“The former South Carolina coach has been entering and leaving the Bulldogs’ highly secure football complex daily this week and parked in a spot at the Butts-Mehre Building. What he has done in the intervening hours is unknown,” said AJC’s Chip Towers wrote on Wednesday.

Muschamp and South Carolina parted ways with four more seasons left on the coach’s contract and the Gamecocks owe the former Georgia player a sizeable purchase. Muschamp and the school agreed on a contract extension in late 2018 that would lead to 2024, but after a disappointing 2019 campaign and problems this season, South Carolina decided to move in a new direction.
Known for his defensive prowess before becoming the first head coach in Florida, Muschamp led the Gamecocks in appearances in each of the first three seasons, finishing second in the Eastern SEC and going 9-4 in 2017. That was soon after a debut season of six victories in Columbia that immediately followed a 3-9 campaign. Things changed last season, however, when the program lost the bowl’s eligibility only for the second time in 11 seasons and for the first time since his term began in 2016.
Muschamp was hired to help South Carolina compete against the Eastern powers of the SEC, Georgia and Florida, but his last two seasons have taken the program on a downward trajectory. The Gamecocks were 2-7 against Georgia and Florida under Muschamp. Before starting his career as a coach, Muschamp served as a defender in Georgia from 1991-94.
After obtaining his bachelor’s degree at UGA, Muschamp was a graduate assistant to Terry Bowden in Auburn from 1995-96. Muschamp ended up returning to the SEC in 2001, when Nick Saban hired him as a linebacker coach at LSU. He was promoted to defensive coordinator the following season and moved with Saban to the NFL on the Miami Dolphins team in 2005.
