Former South Carolina coach Will Muschamp accepted an off-field position in Georgia, his alma mater, as an analyst on Kirby Smart’s team.
Smart said on Wednesday that Muschamp, also a former Florida coach, will focus on defense. He played in Georgia as a defender from 1991-94 and was a defensive coordinator in Auburn, Louisiana State and Texas.
“It is very valuable to have a guy who was a coach in two different places at our conference,” said Smart. “He knows the intricacies of this conference. He can help our team, our coaches, in many ways. I’m excited to be able to have you with us. “
Muschamp was fired by South Carolina in the middle of the 2020 season. The Gamecocks were 2-5 when the shot was announced on November 15, leaving him with 28-30 in his fifth season. Muschamp is 58-51 overall, including 28-21 in Florida from 2011-14.
“He’s already made a lot of progress in terms of helping me, helping our team,” said Smart. “He will be able to help train the coaches.”
Muschamp’s role as an analyst may be only a short-term situation. Smart said Muschamp, 49, plans to seek another coaching position.
“I would say that whenever you are an aspiring coach, you want to take the field,” said Smart. “You want an opportunity to train on the grass. I know he hasn’t finished his coaching days yet. This is very important for him to be able to get out there and have relationships and develop a position group and be technical. “
Smart said Muschamp’s position in Georgia was finalized last week.
Another former Georgia player and assistant coach, Mike Bobo, served as South Carolina’s interim coach after Muschamp’s resignation. After the season, Frank Beamer was hired as a coach.
Muschamp’s son Jackson is a quarterback in Georgia.
“Your family has been your focus recently,” said Smart. “I know that he feels he has changed his family across the country. This is an opportunity for him to come back with them and be with them and be able to watch his son play ”.
