The Philadelphia Eagles signed Nick Sirianni as their head coach. It was a rather surprising move.
And in the eyes of former NFL executive Mike Lombardi, it was the wrong decision.
Originally, it was thought that the search for the Eagles’ coach fell to Duce Staley and the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, Josh McDaniels. But they ended up handing over to the Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator, leaving McDaniels to return to Foxboro.
It is for a simple reason that Lombardi thinks Philly chose it wrong.
“I think it’s a mistake for the Eagles,” Lombardi said on Friday at WEEI, as transcribed by WEEI.com. “I mean, they hired a guy who never called the shots. The guy never called the shots and they’re doing it – the Eagles are really like a nostalgic touring band. They want to hire someone who has reached season 17 and cannot hire Frank Reich, so they are going to get a coach who has already been with Frank Reich. I mean, I think it will be a difficult event. “
Obviously, it is an advantage for the Patriots that they don’t have to look for a new OC, especially with all the player decisions that need to be made.
As for the Eagles, time will tell if they made the right choice.
