Floating head of Cal Ripken Jr. hits wife’s legal oath, Zoom

The floating head of baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. hit his wife’s judicial confirmation hearing on Zoom this week.

While Maryland judge Laura Ripken was being confirmed to the Special Appeals Court on Monday, she said, “joining me today in our home office is my husband Cal, who has been my biggest fan and the most wonderful husband imaginable “.

The former Baltimore Orioles player joined his wife on the video conference, but the virtual background he used made him appear disembodied. Judge Ripken’s hair looked purple during the confirmation hearing.

“Here is the proof that I didn’t become just a head and Laura didn’t dye her hair purple,” Cal Ripken Jr., also known as “The Iron Man”, tweeted while sharing a photo of himself hugging his wife.

Judge Ripken was first appointed to the court in 2010. Since January 2019, she has served as president of the Circuit Court Judge Conference. She is also the judge who presides over the case of Jarrod Ramos, who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting five people at The Capital Gazette in 2018.

The floating head event took place the same week that a Texas lawyer attended a virtual hearing using a filter that made him look like a white cat.

Also this week, Congressman Tom Emmer, R-Minn., appeared upside down during a virtual committee hearing. Mrs Maxine Waters, D-Calif., Asked if he was okay.

“I don’t know how to fix this,” Emmer replied after several members said he was upside down. A representative jokingly commented during the hearing that “at least he is not a cat”.

Emmer later reappeared with the right side up.
