An investigation was launched by public health officials in Mexico after a young doctor was paralyzed minutes after getting the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. Her family asked for more research to be carried out.
Karla Cecilia Perez was partially paralyzed in her arms and legs a few hours after receiving the injection from Pfizer / BioNTech on December 30 and was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit at the Coahuila hospital in the state of Nuevo Leon. She also struggled to speak, according to media reports.
She had several seizures, as well as a skin rash, weakness and breathing difficulties, all half an hour after receiving the vaccine. She has since been diagnosed with encephalomyelitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord).
Perez is now in a stable condition and is no longer having seizures, but his family requested additional tests to examine the potentially hidden side effects of the Pfizer / BioNtech Covid-19 vaccine, as well as further analysis of his condition to see if she had any underlying allergies that may have triggered the extreme reaction.
“We are not insisting that it was caused by the vaccine. However, it is necessary to clarify whether it is related to inoculation of the vaccine. We are not arguing that it was the reason. There must be some research to be sure, ” Carlos Palestino, the woman’s brother-in-law, said.

Prior to inoculation, Perez had reported adverse allergic reactions to trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole antibiotics that can cause seizures, skin rashes and anaphylactic shock in some patients.
In early December 2020, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention registered at least four cases of partial facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy) in recipients of the Pfizer vaccine.
However, according to the Mexican Ministry of Public Health, among all recipients of the Pfizer / BioNtech vaccine in human tests, no cases of encephalitis (swelling of the brain) have been recorded.
Perez remains under observation and is undergoing treatment, including a course of steroids and anticonvulsant drugs to reduce the risk of recurring side effects.
Perez’s family says the alarm has sounded to draw attention to the case in the hope that the young doctor will be cured and that others can be spared similar side effects, but have stressed that they are not trying to dissuade the public from getting vaccinated.
