Everything we know about the recent drunken driving incidents involving Detroit firefighters

DETROIT – There have been two separate incidents while drunk driving involving Detroit firefighters recently.

The first incident occurred on February 21, when the operator of Squadron 6, a heavy rescue engine, collided with a car parked on the east side of Detroit when answering a call about a woman who was ill. The fireman was examined for alcohol and the department said he tested above the legal limit.

Sources said that firefighter and his team were at a retirement party and promotions at Engine House 50 when the call came. Sources said alcohol was being consumed at that party.

The second recent incident occurred on Monday morning. Acting chief 5 did not respond to calls about a house fire on the west side of Detroit.

The veteran firefighter was later found trapped in a department SUV, hanging over Lodge Freeway. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

“I take this very seriously. It will not be tolerated, ”said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Duggan said that the department and he himself should have anticipated the titis’ arrival and reinforced the employee assistance program.

The Fire Union said it would like to receive help.

The SUV was Chief 5 of the Detroit Fire Department. A fire captain was arrested on Monday. Sources said the captain was driving while under the influence of drugs.

The incident started on Monday morning at 2 am, when a fire broke out on the west side of Detroit in Majestic and Livernois.

The captain should be present, he would serve as the main trainer for the firefighting operation. Repeated calls were made over the radio, but the captain could not be reached, the sources said.

Sources told Local 4 that the captain had been suspended in 2016 after an incident involving codeine that was not prescribed for him.
