Epic Games bought Mediatonic, maker of last year’s Battle Royale hit Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, the company announced today.

According to Epic, “the gameplay is not changing” and the company will continue to support Fall Guys “Between platforms”, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. It is not exactly clear what this will mean for the future of the game on Steam, however, as Epic continues to invest in exclusives for its rival digital game store. The company previously purchased Rocket League creator Psyonix in 2019, and a year later, new sales of the game were halted on Steam.

Past Mediatonic games include the excellent Murder by Numbers puzzle game as well as the Gears Pop! mobile adaptation of Gears of war.

Fall Guys launched last summer there and on PS4 as a free PlayStation Plus game for paid subscribers, and proved to be a good distraction from the ongoing pandemic thanks to its silly and chaotic online multiplayer. It has also been a crossover power, with skins released every few weeks displaying characters ranging from sonic for Cuphead.

“It’s no secret that Epic is investing in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares that goal,” Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney, said in a press release. “While Epic works to build that virtual future, we need great creative talents who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”

Last month, Mediatonic announced that the game would be coming to Switch and Xbox later this summer.
