Deborah Copaken, writer of the hit Netflix series Emily In Paris, said the success of his show at the Golden Globe nominations was hampered by the fact that I can destroy you was forgotten.
Emily In Paris was one of Globes’ surprise packages on Wednesday after the show was nominated for best TV series, musical or comedy. The protagonist, Lily Collins, is also a candidate for best actress in a television musical or comedy.
On the other hand, Michaela Coel’s authentic BBC / HBO limited series, I can destroy you, was a shocking omission, despite gaining acclaim from almost universal criticism for her interpretation of a woman putting together the pieces of the events of a night when she was sexually abused.
After reading about the scorn in the Deadline, Copaken tweeted that it was “just wrong”. She later expanded on her comments in an opinion piece for The Guardian, in which she explained that this speaks to something rotten in the industry.

“I’m excited about that Emily in Paris It was named? Yes of course. I have never been even remotely close to seeing a Golden Globe statue up close, much less being nominated for one, ”wrote Copaken.
“But this excitement is now unfortunately tempered by my anger over Coel’s contempt. what I can destroy you did not receive a nod to the Golden Globe is not only wrong, it is what is wrong with everything. “
She added: “We need art that reflects all of our colors, not just some. But we also need to reward programs (and songs and films and plays and musicals) that deserve them, no matter the skin color of their creators.
“IS Hamilton great because Lin-Manuel Miranda is Puerto Rican? No. It’s great because it hits. By that same symbol, as anyone can watch I can destroy you and not calling it a brilliant work of art or Michaela Coel a genius is beyond my ability to understand how these decisions are made. “
Copaken added this I can destroy you is her favorite show. “It takes the complicated issue of rape – I am a sexual assault survivor myself – and infuses it with heart, humor, emotion and a story built so well that I had to watch it twice, just to understand how Coel did it. “
