“This afternoon I met with Dwayne and informed him that we would be releasing him,” said Washington coach Ron Rivera in a statement.
“I told him that I believe it is beneficial for both parties to follow separate paths. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him well.”
Haskins was eliminated during Washington’s loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
His demotion came after a tumultuous week that saw Haskins lose his role as one of Washington’s captains and was fined an undisclosed amount for violating the Covid-19 team’s protocols.
Washington demoted and fined Haskins after the team was informed of social media posts showing the 23-year-old without a mask while attending his girlfriend’s birthday party.
Haskins was the team’s choice in the first round draft in 2019 and the 15th overall.
The former Ohio State University defender apologized to his team last week for their virus protocol actions, saying they were “immature and unacceptable”.
Haskins talked about Monday’s release on his private Twitter account, according to ESPN and several other media outlets, saying he has taken “full responsibility for not meeting the standards of an NFL QB and will become a player and better man because of that experience “.
Washington closes the regular season this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles with the hope of a playoff spot still alive.
