“It’s hard to grow up in front of people,” said Drew, choking. “It’s just difficult.”
Drew Barrymore said he was admitted to a psychiatric ward at age 13 by his mother, Jaid Barrymore.
During an emotional interview on “The Howard Stern Show”, Hollywood royalty said her reckless behavior as a child star led her to hospital.
“I was going to clubs and not going to school and stealing my mom’s car and I was out of control,” Drew started. “So sometimes it was just as funny as that and sometimes I was really angry about going out and being thrown at the thing.”

She explained that “the thing” was a “complete psychiatric ward”, where she stayed for 18 months. But it was not a luxury rehab clinic, according to the star.
“I used to laugh at those 30-day places in Malibu,” recalled the 46-year-old talk show host. “Malibu was the opposite of the experience I had. I stayed in a place for a year and a half called Van Nuys Psychiatric. And you couldn’t play inside and if you did, you would also be thrown into a padded room or put in restraints. stretcher and tied. “
The extended time at Van Nuys Psychiatric brought her to the realization that she needed the discipline.
“I asked myself, ‘Why is this happening?’ And I thought, ‘Maybe you need the craziest form of structure because everything was so accessible and messy in your world that it might take something like that to get you started for the rest of your life,’ “she explained.” And it took about six to eight months. For the first six to eight months, I was very angry. I couldn’t see well. “
The experience allows Drew to sympathize with other women who were thrown into the limelight from an early age with parents intervening to regulate, such as Britney Spears, whose guardianship controlled by her father was questioned with the recent film “Framing Britney Spears.”
“I didn’t see the documentary,” Drew told Howard. “So, I don’t know what’s going on there. But I have such empathy – you know that Paris Hilton appeared on the show and was hospitalized by her mother – and you think Britney and Paris – I’m sure people look and think : ‘These party girls, these privileges, how dare they have feelings about all of this? They put themselves there, asked for it – it’s fair f —— game,’ and I just say, ‘They are human. just humans’, and I have a lot of empathy. “
“It is difficult to grow up in front of people,” she added, suffocating. “It’s just difficult.”
Meanwhile, after a lifetime of introspection, the “ET” actress said she learned to “forgive” her mother for sending her to the infirmary.

“I think after 30 years of therapy and a lot of soul searching and having children, I think she created a monster,” explained Drew. “And she didn’t know what to do with the monster. She probably felt like she had nowhere to turn. And I’m sure she lived with a lot of guilt for years, about the creation of the monster, but then I think she lived with a lot of pain that I also wouldn’t talk to her for a long time. “
“I mean, the pain I went through because of that – I felt so guilty,” she continued. “Denying my mother’s access to me, it felt like I was cutting off the source of life. It was the most difficult feeling I have ever experienced. Definitely the worst pain I have ever known.”
Drew added that she has since reconciled with Jaid, and that they even exchanged text messages before the interview with Howard Stern.
“I feel kindness towards my mother. I feel empathy and understanding.”
It is further proof that the pair is on the right track; Drew’s daughters Olive, eight, and Frankie, six, met their maternal grandmother.
“But there are real limits, distance and a lot of respect,” said Drew.
