Drew Barrymore shares his ’empathy’ for Britney Spears, talks about his own time in a psychiatric ward

Drew Barrymore is speaking out in support of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton amid new attention on how former party girls were treated in their youth.

Barrymore has been in the public eye since he was a child and currently hosts his own talk show. During a recent appearance on Howard Stern’s show, the star discussed her own wild days that led to her being admitted to a psychiatric ward when she was 13.

The host compared her situation to that of Spears, leading the host to note that she has “so much empathy” for the people in her position.

“Paris Hilton came to this show and she was hospitalized by her mother and, you know, you think like Britney and Paris and I thought for myself, I’m sure people look and think, ‘These party girls, these privileges, like them dare you have feelings about all this? They put themselves there, they asked for it – it’s a fair game, ‘and I just say,’ They are human. They are just human ‘, and I have a lot of empathy, “explained the star.

Stern previously shared his support for Spears as the public continues to discuss the life of the pop star and the treatment passed in the public eye after the release of the documentary “Framing Britney Spears” and his battle for guardianship with his father, Jamie Spears. Hilton, for her part, made headlines earlier this year when she talked about her experience at an abusive boarding school she attended when she was young.

Barrymore also talked about his time in a psychiatric ward after his mother was desperate for help to raise her when she was 13.

“My mom put me in a place that looked like a complete psychiatric ward. I used to laugh at these places, like Malibu 30 days. They talked about things that bothered me. I was like … A little spa vacation for 30 days in Malibu it was the opposite of the experience I had, “she explained. “I stayed in a place for a year and a half called Van Nuys Psychiatric and you couldn’t play there. If you did, you would be thrown into the padded room or put on stretcher chains and tied.”

Barrymore said the time she was stuck in that place was marked by a constant rebellion, following the lead of punk rockers like Wendy O. Williams of Plasmatics, which she idolized.

“I would channel my inner rebel girl,” she said, noting that she would start mini-revolutions against the team with her colleagues.

“It was kind of like a children’s facility and kind of like an old people’s home, so while I irritated these girls, the woman on the walker passed by. It was hilarious, ”she added.

Although she resented her mother for putting her there at the time, already an adult and mother of two, she understands why her mother was at the end of her line, admitting that she was “out of control”.

“I think she created a monster and didn’t know what to do with it,” admitted the star. “This was her last breath, and I really was out of control, and I forgive her for making that choice. She probably felt she had nowhere to turn.”

Stern asked her if she has a good relationship with her mother today, for which the star noted that they communicate all the time.

“I am very happy that there is a cure there,” she concluded.
