Douglas County reports 9 new cases of California’s COVID-19 variant

(WOWT) – Below are today’s vaccination updates, as well as data reports on new cases and other COVID-19 statistics reported by health officials in Nebraska and Iowa.

Douglas County Update

The Douglas County Health Department confirmed on Saturday that nine cases of the California variant (B.1.429) were found. Just a day after the state announced its first case of variant B.1.1.7 COVID-19 found in the United Kingdom, DHHS also confirmed that four extra cases were found by the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory.

Two cases have been identified at Public Health Solutions, one in Lancaster-Lincoln and one in East Central. This is a total of 13 cases of the California variant.

Officials say the California variant spreads more easily, but the vaccines available are effective against it.

Lincoln-Lancaster Update

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department confirmed its first case of the California variant strain COVID-19, called B.1.429, on Saturday. The case was identified as a man in his 60s.

Officials say the variant was identified through special tests at the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory.

The health department also notified 65 more cases, totaling 28,151 in the community. The total number of deaths remains at 221.

Vaccination clinics

Douglas County

Until further notice, Douglas County clinics will provide COVID-19 vaccines to eligible residents at the following times and locations:

  • TER / QUA – Church of the Community of Christ, located at 404 S. 108th St., clinics will provide vaccines from 9 am to 5 pm
  • WED / SEX – CHI Immanuel Medical Center, located at 72nd Street and Sorensen Parkway, vaccination will be given from 9 am to 5 pm
  • THU / SUN – Nebraska Medical Test and Vaccination Clinic, located at 144th Street and Millard Avenue, vaccination will be given from 9 am to 5 pm on Thursdays and from 9 am to 3 pm on Sundays.
  • Creighton University Rasmussen Center, located at 702 N. 17th St., vaccinations will be administered from 9 am to 9 pm

In addition, the Kroc Center is planning clinics from 10 am to 4 pm on February 26, March 4 and March 8. However, starting on Thursday, all appointments to these clinics will be full.

Pottawattamie County

County residents aged 65 and over must register on the Pottawattamie County vaccination website. Those who need help can also call the Aging Connections Area Agency at 712-328-2540 to sign up for an appointment over the phone.

IOWA VACCINE HOTLINE: Older or home Iowans looking for help scheduling a COVID-19 vaccination appointment can call 1-866-468-7887 from 8 am to 4:30 pm from Monday to Friday; or contact Aging Connections Area Agency at the 712-328-2540 or 1-800-432-9209.
