Douglas County vaccine update

In an update to the commissioner’s council, Douglas County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said the county received just over 12,000 vaccines this week, up 14 percent from last week.

Of these, 10 percent are for educators in the field who are still at the beginning of the vaccination process.

Douglas County is also receiving 5,000 doses of the newly approved Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

“We actually have the flexibility to vaccinate our critical infrastructure employees, so we went back to our superintendents to see if they were interested in this for their educators and they said yes,” said Dr. Pour.

Dr. Pour said that this weekend, 2 clinics will be set up to continue the vaccination effort. One will be at Millard North High School, the other in Omaha North.

COVID-19 variants in Douglas County

The UK variant B117 was identified in the county on Friday, and several cases of the California variant appeared on Saturday.

Dr. Pour says the health department worked over the weekend to find people who were in contact with the infected patients, to test them for the new variants.

Although the results are still pending, Dr. Pour says it is an important reminder that we are still in a pandemic and that security measures need to remain in place.

“We have to be conscientious when wearing our masks, maintain our social distance and, most importantly, distribute vaccines as quickly as possible to as many people as possible,” said Dr. Pour.

Dr. Pour also mentioned that the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is effective against new variants of the coronavirus.

According to the statement, medical and surgical beds were at 75% occupancy with 366 available beds and adult ICU beds are occupied at a rate of 64% with 120 available beds.
