Sunday’s records offer a snapshot of continued financial support from Trump’s loyal supporter base. He formed Save America shortly after losing the election last November. Even when allegations of fraud by his legal team were launched in courts across the country, Trump aggressively sought new donations, begging his taxpayers to help finance his “electoral defense”.
But the first and biggest cut in contributions went to Save America, an important vehicle for his post-presidential political activity. He can use the leadership cap to donate to other candidates, as well as finance travel and staff. Federal rules set few restrictions on leadership spending on the PAC, which campaign watchers warn could turn into secret funds for politicians.
Save America spent little in the last weeks of 2020, with just over $ 200,000 going to subscribe to merchant fees on the online fundraising platform, WinRed, as shown by the Federal Electoral Commission records. Records cover activities between November 24 and December 31.
While Save America spent little in the final weeks of 2020, Trump’s campaign committee has accumulated millions in expenses. They included more than $ 4.4 million for about two dozen law firms and more than $ 5 million in advertising that the campaign classified as recount expenses.
Millions more may be available for Trump’s political operation as he works to extend his influence over the party.
His campaign account started in January with $ 10.7 million in cash remaining and just over $ 2.7 million in debt, records show. The Trump Make America Great Again Committee – a joint fundraising committee that included the Republican National Committee, the Trump and Save America campaign – started the year with more than $ 59.8 million remaining in its coffers – a portion of which could be destined for Trump’s New PAC.
Save America has already become part of Trump’s political infrastructure.
After a meeting last week with House minority leader Kevin McCarthy of California, Save America issued a statement, stating that “President Trump’s popularity has never been as strong as it is today, and his endorsement means more than any endorsement at any time. “
