Nick McGlashan, known for his witty jokes and sea skills in Discovery’s ‘Deadliest Catch’, passed away at the age of 33.
McGlashan died in Nashville and, at this time, no cause of death has been provided, reports CNN.
The Alaskan native came from a long line of crabbers and McGlashan started working on a boat at the tender age of 13.
Discovery released a statement about McGlashan’s death, saying: “Our deepest condolences go out to Nick’s loved ones during this difficult time,” said the statement. “Nick came from a long line of crabbers and was known for his great knowledge. He also had a keen sense of humor, even in the most difficult conditions. He will be deeply missed by everyone who met him.”
McGlashan started appearing on the network’s reality show, ‘Deadliest Catch’ in 2013. The show chronicles the lives of crews working on fishing vessels in the Bering Sea and McGlashan was introduced as the deckmaster.
The reality show star’s fight against substance abuse was released in May, he talked about it in an article from Chosen Magazine entitled “The Deadliest Disease”.
McGlashan openly shared his struggle to overcome addiction to alcohol, heroin and meth, saying he overdosed three times before going into treatment in September 2016. Only then did he sober up.
“My life went from being a badass in Bering Sea to a fully developed drug addict very quickly. Hidden from me was that passion I had for life,” he wrote. “Taken from me was my ability to live. I was at war with my addiction and I was winning.”
For a brief period of time during season 13, McGlashan was fired from the boat so that he had time to face his addiction and recovery.
CNN reports that McGlashan is one of several cast members who died, including sailor Mahlon Reyes, who died at age 38 in August after suffering a heart attack.
