COVID vaccine updates: Scientists concerned about New York’s ‘escape variant’

NEW YORK (WABC) – Health officials are warning of a variant of COVID-19 spreading in New York, saying that current vaccines may be less effective against the new strain as more Americans are taking the injections.

“Some scientists are calling this an ‘escape variant’ because it may have the ability to bypass our immune system,” said Dr. Alok Patel, a medical collaborator at ABC News. “Possibly making our treatments less effective.”

Meanwhile, almost half of the country is easing the restrictions on the pandemic, aiming at a return to normal. Still, Dr. Anthony Fauci is warning Americans to remain vigilant against the virus.

The White House is setting a new hopeful benchmark, with July 4 as a symbolic goal to motivate Americans to continue to follow the rules.

More than 11% of adults are already fully vaccinated.
