Speculation has persisted for years that Jeff Bezos may try to buy an NFL team. Speculation went on for months about whether Bezos might try to buy the Washington Football Team.

Via AJ Perez of FrontOfficeSports.com, court documents filed in India regarding Daniel Snyder’s defamation complaint link Bezos to the outside company that is trying to find buyers for the minority stake in the team owned by Dwight Schar, Fred Smith and Robert Rothman.

It is important to remember, however, that this does not mean that Bezos may be buying the team. Instead, he would buy at most a limited bet that has no real power over the team.

The big question, not addressed by Perez, is whether Bezos would buy the majority stake in the team. Before Bezos could do that, Snyder would have to be willing to sell the majority stake in the team. He is not, at least not currently.

The wildcard becomes the pending investigation regarding various types of alleged or actual irregularities involving the franchise and / or Snyder. If Snyder is ever pressured to sell and give in to that pressure, Bezos can attack. This is a different matter than whether he bought a part of Schar, Smith and / or Rothman’s team.
