“It is a very difficult scene to do.”

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Wonder Woman 1984.]

One of my favorite strings in Wonder Woman 1984 it does not involve theaters of superheroes, nor invisible jets of drugs, nor amusing shiny loops (although they are all amusing as well). This sequence simply involves two characters saying goodbye, with actors Gal Gadot and Chris Pine playing his tragedy with perfect vulnerability. Steve Weintraub of Collider spoke with Pine as part of the Wonder Woman 1984 press junket, and when he asked Pine about this amazing sequence, Pine told us everything.

Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman

In this scene, Diana (Gadot) and Steve (Pine) recently realized that using the wishing stone means that you lose something important to you. As Diana wished Steve to return, the stone took away its powers, leaving our Wonder Woman broken and stumbling. And in the midst of the chaos that erupted in Washington DC, Steve finally convinces Diana to renounce her desire and get her powers back – which, unfortunately, will send Steve back to the ether where he came from. Gadot and Pine agree in tears and say goodbye, resulting in a positively inducing moment of dramatic chills in the photo.

Here’s what Pine said about filming right now, making sure to give Gadot and the director / co-writer lots of praise Patty Jenkins:

“We shot it on Avenida Pennsylvania. We shot that day when we were part of that huge weeklong run running down Avenida Pennsylvania, and she running down and then looping up. We did it in stages, and we went after the pillar and made the scene. a very difficult scene to do, especially when there are many other actions and other things to do for the rest of the day, and certainly very exciting for her. And Patty is very good at making sure we have the space to really discover the scene and make it authentic, and then really push us as actors to get there, and accept nothing less than the absolute truth. It really was a credit to Gal for being so emotionally open and Patty for being such an advocate. ”
